Preconditions: bondet pet
You need a pet you have bonded. This pet can be resurrected after death. To be honest you can also train a pet exactly how it is described here if it isn't bonded, but after a possible death of the pet all efforts are lost. So this is not advisable!
The use of it
Your pets can advance in level, through gathering experience points while fighting. Additional to their Skills, which can be Pet Training they also have a step-based component, which can not be found elsewhere in Ultima-Online.
With this training you can not only train the skills of the pet directly (they rise passively while fighting), but, through spending ability points, you can also raise the abilities of the pet, which are usually not modifiable: The stats and resistances!
Experience points

We call this amount of points basic-points N. The amount of needed XP raises with every level by N. If you want your pet to advance from level m to level (m+1), you have to, while it is on level m, gather m*N XP. So from level 1 to level m you need N*m*(m+1)/2 XP. Thus a pet at level 25 needs 25*N XP, has already collected an amount varying between 300*N and 325*N XP and needs 4% more XP to advance than it needed for advancement from level 23 to level 24.
If you want to see, how many XP your pet has, just open the pull down menu of the pet and click on NPC Info.
Now there are opening two windows:
The Skill-WindowHere you can see and set up, what skills your pet already has mastered, how good it is in using them and which one it should continoue learning or even which one it should unlearn. There is a skillcap for pets also, so you might be forced to decide between your pet beeing good in magery or fighting. The skills are beeing raised, lowered ore locked just like the ones of your own character. |
The XP-WindowHere you see the current level of your pet, the available abilitypoints and the needed XP for advancing to the next level and so on. If ability points are available, you see a red Gem in the window you can click on. Then the raising-window will open. |
The Raising-Window
Here you can see, which attributes your pet has alredy unlocked for raising and how high they can be raised. If you klick on the button left of the attribute, the attribute will be raised by one. This is not reversible so take care!! If you don't want to raise anything, just close the window with a right-click.
Some attributes only be raised, if the pet has reached a certain level. The minimumlevel for this and the according cap you can see in the right picture.
leveladvancement: ability points
If your pet hase gathered enough XP, it automatically advances a level. This is announced with a sound, an animation and a big red entry in your journal ("...level increased..."). A Pet, which has experienced a level advancement, gets Ability Points. The amount of these points is determined by random and varies mostly between 1 and 6. However, sometimes it is possible for you to get a much higher amount of ability points. This varies between 8 to 50 points. The rule for this is not known to public unfortunately.

Depending on the current level of the pet you can chose what stat of your pet you want to increase. More specific:

Since the highes maximum level of creatures found in the wild is set to 30, the last three values (Strengh, Dexterity, Intelligence) can not be raised until your pet has reached level 40 via multiple.
